AGL Installs Solar Batteries

ENERGY giant AGL will install  solar power batteries  on 1000 homes across Adelaide, building a ‘virtual power plant’ to provide back-up electricity to householders and the state’s energy grid during times of high energy demand. In what is expected to be the largest project of its kind in the world, the batteries will store excess solar power that would otherwise be fed into the grid and will be able to be drawn upon by the customer, reducing their power costs and demand on the grid.  Mostly, our portable solar power generator  is also use these batteries. AGL will also have the ability to direct power from the battery to the customer’s home or into the grid during critical events such as peak demand resulting from severe weather.  Any solar energy exported to the grid will occur at the agreed retail feed in tariff. The first aircraft powered solely by the sun made a historic landing in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, completing the 25,000 mile, round-the-world journey that began in March 2015.  The Swiss-engineered Solar Impulse 2 was piloted by Bertrand Piccard on the final part of its epic expedition that took off from Cairo earlier this week. Australian homeowners may be flocking to energy storage in droves. But one of the country’s biggest engineering consultancies doesn’t see the financial sense in it. Victoria-based Aurecon, which has operations across Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Middle East, and which has been associated with major renewable energy projects such as the Kogan Creek Solar Boost plant, says the financial impact of adding batteries to residential PV is “negative." “Aurecon has modeled multiple scenarios with a Tesla Powerwall   lithium-ion battery  pack  coupled with a 4-kilowatt rooftop PV system,” said Victor Young, the company’s market director for energy, oil and gas. “Adding batteries increases the cost of power even in the most favorable circumstance of a zero feed-in tariff from the network provider.” As it happens, the Powerwall might not be the best battery on the Australian market, on a cost per total warranted kilowatt-hours basis. Australia’s first bulk-buy program for solar battery storage has launched, with more than 1,000 people in Newcastle expressing interest and more than 500 attending a sign-up event on Thursday night to buy home battery systems. From Friday, the program is being opened to people all around Australia. The cost and complexity of  solar power storage  solutions , and the expectation that prices will come down , has so far discouraged purchases. Until customer numbers rise it is hard for wholesalers, retailers and installers to bring their prices down, said Simon Sheikh, managing director of Future Super and a co-founder of the bulk-buy solar storage company SunCrowd. “The problem is how to scale up the solar storage industry faster so as to reduce the costs for those companies,” he said. “If each company has got to spend $1,000 acquiring a customer, that’s $1,000 they’re going to put on top of the price.
