Tesla upgrades power output of its home battery with the same prices

Tesla announced today thatit will upgrade its line of home Powerwall batteries to more than double their initial output with the same price.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, this decision to boost the power output of the batteries followed some "negative" feedback after the Powerwall products were first announced.

"We actually took some of the negative feedback to heart, and I'm happy to announce we've dramatically increased the power capability of the Powerwall," Musk told investors at the company's annual shareholders meeting in Mountain View, Calif. today.

Musk said, the Powerwall batteries will go from having a two-kilowatt (kW) steady power output and 3.3kW peak output to a 5kW steady output and 7kW peak output.

It will keep the same price of the batteries: $3,000 for the 7kW/hour (KWh) daily cycle version and $3,500 for the 10kWh backup UPS version.

"The daily cycler is sort of more about economics or getting off the grid completely, whereas the backup UPS is just there to ensure your house has power if there's ever a power outage," Musk said.


Homeowners who've signed up for solar panel installations or homes that already have them will receive "priority" treatment for delivery of the new Powerwall batteries, Musk said.

"It doesn't have to be SolarCity," Musk quipped, referring to the largest U.S. installer of residential solar systems, of which Musk is the chairman. "SolarCity is, of course, preferred, if you like the best."

Musk explained the "preferential" treatment has to do with the fact that solar systems already have direct current to alternating current inverters, which enable the Powerwalls to be more easily installed.

"We're also going to be prioritizing delivery of the Powerwall to partners that minimize the cost to the end user," he said. "So that the net result is we're expecting people to be able to purchase and install the Powerwall for about $4,000."

The Powerwall batteries, announced in May, are about 51-in. x 34-in. x 7.5-in. in size. The batteries come with a 10-year warranty.

Up to nine Powerwall battery units can be daisy-chained together on a wall to provide up to 90kWh of power. The average U.S. household uses about 20 kWh to 25 kWh of power every day, according to GTM Research.

Tesla announced last year that it partnered with Panasonic to make its lithium-ion batteries in what it calls "Gigafactories," the first one of which is under construction in Reno, Nevada.

Daimler commits to release its own line of home batteries to take on Tesla

Daimler, Mercedes-Benz and smart parent company, has announced that it will release its own line of batteries for homes and small businesses within this year. The batteries will be available exclusively in Germany initially, but Daimler wants to gradually expand the market to other European countries and, possibly, the United States in the medium-term future.

Daimler executives explained quickly that the decision to enter the home battery market isn’t a direct response to Tesla’s recent announcement. The company outsources production of the lithium-ion battery packs found its in hybrids and electric vehicles to a wholly-owned subsidiary called Accumotive, which has also been building high-capacity battery packs for large commercial and industrial applications since 2012.
Chemically speaking, Daimler’s home battery is closely related to the lithium-ion battery packs found in the company’s cars. The battery works just like Tesla’s: Ideally mounted on a wall, it can be charged during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper and turned on during peak hours when it is more expensive. Two or more batteries can be combined if extra capacity is needed, and homeowners looking to seriously trim their power bill can link the installation to solar panels or wind turbines.

All of this electric goodness does not come without a cost. If not handled and utilized properly, LiPo batteries can quickly become damaged or even catch on fire. Today, I would like to share some basic things you should know about making the most of LiPo batteries. I will also provide techniques to mitigate the risks that these batteries pose.

When talking about a LiPo, it's neccessery to know the primary characteristics to understand the battery’s voltage and capacity. This is typically noted in a shorthand such as “4S-2200”. In this case, “4S” denotes that the battery has four cells in series. The nominal voltage of each cell is 3.7 volts (4.2v fully-charged), so the total pack voltage is:

4 cells x 3.7v = 14.8v.

The "2200" means the capacity of the battery in milliamp-hours (mAh). A fully charged 2200mAh pack can provide a current of 2200 milliamps (2.2 amps) per hour before it is fully discharged. This capacity value is completely independent of how many cells are in series. In simple terms, the capacity value allows you to estimate how long a battery will provide useful power in a given application. In practical terms for RC use, the capacity rating is typically only helpful for rough comparisons of different batteries. i.e. a 2S-5000 battery will provide about double the run time of a 2S-2500 lipo in the same RC car.

It's quite common when it was 10 years ago, while is now rare to find a RC LiPo battery that uses cells in parallel. Let’s look at an example in case you happen across one. A 4S2P-2200 battery would consist of two 4S-1100 batteries wired in parallel to provide a total 2200mAh capacity. All other things being equal, you would care for and use this battery the same as you would the previous 4S-2200 example (which is really a 4S1P-2200, but we ignore the 1P). There may be a difference in physical size, but a 4S-2200 and a 4S2P-2200 are functionally equivalent. China's BYD ramps up 'leccycar battery production in challenge to Tesla
